Stylist advice: Key trends in women's tops this season

Shopping for women's tops online: key trends this season

Tops are probably the easiest of all the garments in your wardrobe to accumulate, but the question is: do you even wear half of them? There are many things to consider when shopping for women's tops: colour, price, fabric, brand. And then things get trickier: sleeves or no sleeves? V-neck or scoop neck? Waterfall cardigan or cropped cardigan? We've broken down some of the key trends this season in shapes, styles and fabric, so shopping for new tops will be that much easier. And you will want to wear each and every one of them!

Key trends to look out for in women's tops:

Asymmetric/one-shoulder tops: Perfect for evening, there is an added glam factor that only a bare shoulder and arm can provide! Accessorising can be tricky (avoid necklaces as they can look awkward) - consider adding a simple, sparkly brooch to the shoulder instead.

Sheer/lace tops: It can be hard to pull off a sheer or lace top elegantly, so consider investing in a lovely (and tasteful) lace bra or camisole to wear underneath. If you feel self-conscious about exposing too much skin, try a top with sheer panels in the sleeves, neckline or back.

Layered knits: Long-line and waterfall drape cardigans are perfect for layering over and under vests, t-shirts and jackets. Whether you go for a fine knit or a chunky cable, keep colours neutral in order to work it into the rest of your wardrobe.

Sequins, studs and embellishments: Embellishment is no longer strictly confined to evening. Zips, buckles, studding and sequins make an appearance this season and can either toughen up or add some razzle-dazzle to your outfit.
