You may associate women's skirts with spring and summer, but don’t forget that a great skirt worn with tights can be extremely chic in winter too, whether as a work look, for a casual weekend or heading out for the evening. Make sure you shop the right skirt style for your shape by reading our handy tips:
Petite: shorter hemline will elongate legs (add heels for extra elevation) while styles which sit directly on the waist or above will also make your legs appear longer. Make sure your skirt is fitted and not too big, as ill-fitting styles can overwhelm your shape and make you look smaller. If you are looking to create more curves, then a pear or tulip shape will add volume to your hips – make sure you wear a fitted top or blouse tucked in, so your waist is defined.
Pear-shaped: Draw the eye upwards and away from your curvy lower half, by wearing a dark-coloured skirt and a light (or bright) coloured top. A-line, pleated, or full circle skirts that hit just above the knee are perfect for skimming over any troublesome areas – team with a puff sleeve blouse or tailored jacket with structured shoulders to balance your silhouette. Avoid gathering, bows and other detailing at the waist.
Hourglass: Make sure your skirts are structured and not loose-fitting – a pencil skirt worn with a skinny belt will maximize your classic hourglass shape (think about adding a short cardigan for a pretty, retro look).
Curvy: Keep your skirt sleek and structured, in a fitted - but not clingy - cut. Select fabrics which have some stretch and styles which hit right at the knee. Keep an eye out for skirts with darts at the front of the waist which will flatten the stomach. Alternatively, go for a gentle A-line style which subtly flares out.
Inverted triangle: Draw the eye away from top half by wearing a dark top and a skirt in a lighter, eye-catching colour or print. Avoid mini skirts or tight pencil skirt styles which will throw your proportions off even further – instead, go for a full circle skirt which will balance your figure.
