In 1968 Laura Ashley launched its first boutique in Pelham Street, Kensington. Quintessentially English, the company received a Queen’s award for export in 1977. Laura had a fatal accident in 1985, but her strong values and design ethos have remained with the company.

The times when the Ashleys were fabricating their first prints on their kitchen table in London are long gone! A few visits to the library to learn about fabric manufacture along with £10 invested in wood for a screen, dyes and linen, allowed them to produce small squares with geometrical prints. The movie Roman Holiday and a new style icon Audrey Hepburn inspired the couple to produce printed headscarves and sell big quantities to John Lewis and Heal’s.
